Good morning, Green Team Friends!
Please read these paragraphs about Hands On Equations, Lesson 14:
Sometimes you have to do subtraction as part of an equation's set-up. Sometimes you do not have the pawns on the balance to do the required subtraction, though.
When this happens, you need to add a convenient zero
(x to both sides, star to both sides, or x and star to the same side) to the balance during the set-up so that you can do your subtraction. Then, when you've set up all parts of the equation, you can solve using the strategies and legal moves we've been practicing in Lessons 1-13.
When you check, you have to add the convenient zero so that you can do the subtraction again, too. This means that the balance won't always look exactly like the equation when you're done setting it up, and that's okay. :) I have included three examples problems as pictures below.
If you have any questions about this, please see me.
If you feel like you understand this, please grab a copy of the Lesson 14 sheet from the horseshoe table and get going. This is due Friday...we'll talk tomorrow afternoon about any that are giving you trouble. :)
