Last summer I wrote a blog post about Remind101 and how it can be used to keep in touch with our classroom. Since that post was written, my subscription codes and the phone number to use for this service have changed. Also, Remind101 has changed to Remind.com. SO, below is a summary of what you need to know for the 2014-2015 school year. This information was also sent home in our sixth grade summer packet. Enjoy! :) Please click here to send me a message if you have any questions or concerns. As an educator and a busy mom, I recognize and value the importance of communication between our classrooms at Bursley and your homes. To that end, I have created an account with the website remind.com, and I’d like to invite you to try it out! Remind provides teachers with an easy way to send text message “blasts” to parents and students, while protecting the privacy of each individual. If you choose to subscribe to my Remind group(s), you will receive text messages on your cell phone from me, but you will never see my personal cell phone number, nor will I be able to see yours. This one-way communication system is meant to deliver reminders only, so replying is not an option. The Remind service does not cost anything, but your mobile phone provider’s text messaging fees may apply. If this sounds like something that you – or your sixth grader – might be interested in trying, please read on for more directions and for your group options. If you have any questions, please let me know. I look forward to a year of collaboration! To enroll in my Remind groups, you must send a text message from your phone to the following Remind.com phone number: In the text message, you must type the code that corresponds to the group you would like to join. If you’d like to enroll in more than one group, a separate text message will have to be sent for each group. These codes are provided below. One of my goals for our school year together is to help sixth graders grow in the area of moral character. We will do this by focusing on one good manner each week. (Click this link for more information.) If you choose to join this group, you will receive one text message each Sunday evening, summarizing our “Manner to Master” for the week. Text @manners to the Remind phone number above to join this group. This second group will be used to share general reminders about Sixth Grade Camp, upcoming field trips or fundraiser due dates, and Bursley events like Parent/Teacher Conferences or holiday parties. Text @bu6-remind to the Remind phone number above to join this group. This third group will be used to share important homework reminders that apply to all sixth graders, including due dates for long-term projects or upcoming assessments. Text @bu6-all to the Remind phone number above to join this group. Finally, for much of our math and ELA instruction, sixth grade students will be placed on teams with peers of similar academic ability. Your child will be on either the Green Team or the White Team, and their team placement may change as the year progresses. My last two Remind.com group options will be used to share homework reminders that are specific to one team, and should match information recorded in student planners. This will be a great way to stay on top of nightly homework expectations, but parents/students should plan to subscribe after the school year starts and teams have been formed. These codes will be @bu6-green and @bu6-white.
A summer mailing was sent out this afternoon to all Bursley sixth grade families, highlighting information you might be interested in knowing prior to Open House and the first day of school. Those documents are also included below for your reference. Enjoy! Included in that packet of information is a request to have all Bursley sixth grade families complete a survey at the following website: http://goo.gl/hLBWMZ If you have not yet done so, please take a minute to provide us with this important information. Thank you! Mrs. Becky Steele
Enjoy this slideshow of our EcoBus adventures! Sometimes the best memories are made when you're freezing cold and soaking wet. :) You may have noticed that Manners to Master is now an option to click in the menu to the left. I have been working hard on this year-long unit the past few weeks, and am excited to share it with my students. Character education is very important to me, and I can't wait to see my students' growth in the area of moral character and manners during the school year ahead!
I would love for this unit to be a collaboration between home and school, as I believe that parents and families should always be a child's primary educator. To welcome families into and support them with this undertaking, I have provided three ways for sixth graders and their support systems to stay informed on our "Manners to Master" program. Please take a minute and read about our Remind101 text message "blasts", check out the calendar that outlines our plan for the school year, and download or take a look at the complete list of 40(!) Manners to Master in Sixth Grade. These are all explained in detail on the Manners to Master page. If you have any questions or concerns, please be sure to send me a message! Dear Students and Parents, I hope you are having a wonderful summer so far! As both an educator and a busy mom, I recognize and value the importance of communication between our classroom at Bursley and your homes. In an effort to do a better job communicating with each of you during the coming school year, I have created an account with the website remind101.com. Remind101 provides teachers with an easy way to send text message "blasts" to parents and students while protecting the privacy of each individual. If you choose to be part of one or all of my Remind101 groups, you will receive text messages on your cell phone from me, but you will never see my personal cell phone number, nor will I be able to see yours. This one-way communication is meant to serve as a simple reminder system, so replying is not an option. (But sending me a message via our classroom website or sending an email to [email protected] is, of course, always an option!) Using the Remind101 service does not cost anything, but you will be charged standard text messaging rates through your mobile phone provider. To enroll in one (or all) of my Remind101 groups, you will send a text message from your phone to the following Remind101 phone number: (616) 209-4136 In the text message, you will type the code that corresponds to the group you would like to join. If you'd like to enroll in more than one group, a separate text message will have to be sent for each group. These codes are provided below... The first option is to get a text after school each evening with a very brief reminder about that evening's homework. Parents and students in my homeroom are welcome to sign up for this group by texting @1314-s6-nh to the phone number above. Signing up for nightly homework reminders means you will receive a maximum of five texts per week during the 2013-2014 school year. The second option is to get a text only when there is something important that I'd like to remind students in my homeroom about, including due dates for long-term projects or upcoming assessments. Parents and students in my homeroom are welcome to sign up for this group by texting @1314-s6-ir to the phone number above. Signing up for important reminders means you will receive a maximum of two texts per week during the 2013-2014 school year. The final option (at least, at this time) is to join the text group for general sixth grade reminders. These would be reminders not-specific to my homeroom, so a great option for students in Mr. Huck's class and their families too. I will use this group to share reminders about sixth grade camp, upcoming field trips or fundraiser due dates, social studies (as I will see all sixth graders for this subject), and Bursley events. Parents and students are welcome to sign up for this group by texting @1314-s6h6 to the phone number above. Signing up for general sixth grade reminders means you will receive a maximum of two texts per week during the 2013-2014 school year. If you have any questions or concerns about Remind101, please feel free to send me a message! Also, do you follow our classroom on Twitter? Check us out at @Room37Tweets. :) Enjoy the summer sunshine, Mrs. Becky Steele I am excited to share that Ms. Lori DeBri will be joining our sixth grade class this fall to do an extended student teaching experience through Grand Valley's Graduate Teacher Certification program. I asked Ms. DeBri to share a little about herself with you, and this is what she wrote:
I'm excited to introduce Ms. DeBri to some of the coolest sixth graders on the planet, and I'm excited for all of you to get to know her too!
Ms. DeBri will be in our classroom on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (full days) between the first day of school and Christmas Break. This is her Teacher Assisting placement, where she will be learning about sixth graders and sixth grade curriculum, observing instruction, and working primarily with small groups of students. Then, she will continue her placement in our classroom full time (Monday-Friday) between Christmas Break and Spring Break. This "second chunk" of time is her Student Teaching, so she will be taking on added responsibilities in our classroom and be providing the majority of the instruction. I have invited Ms. DeBri to Sixth Grade Camp with us in November, too ... so she's in for quite the adventure! Welcome, Ms. DeBri! Attached below brochures about the teachers that your child will see this coming school year. Your child's homeroom teacher sent home a copy of his/her brochure during Meet the Teacher on Thursday, June 6th. Also attached below is an electronic copy of our sixth grade supply list. These are supplies we believe will be essential to student success in sixth grade. Please keep in touch if you have any questions or concerns! And, keep your eye on the ads. School supply sales typically begin the middle of July, and frequently include folders and notebooks being sold for pennies. Consider purchasing extra folders and/or notebooks. These are often used up or falling apart by Christmas break... Thanks!
