In class about a week ago, you took a Map (Pre)Test with Mrs. Girschle. The questions for this pretest can be found on the first pages of your Unit 2, Lesson 1 packet, and the map images that went with this pretest are included in the slideshow below...
In class today, we went over the answers for many of these questions. I have included those answers below. Please check to make sure that you got these answers correct (or at least have the correct answer written down) and that you understand why the answer is correct. If you have any questions, please see me.
- (b) If all streets have the same amount of traffic, you'd want the light at the intersection of 3 streets instead of the intersection of two. Also, there's a school at this intersection and it's important to keep kids safe.
- (c)
- (a) This was covered during our Map Skills mini-unit.
- (d) Use a ruler to measure the distance between the lakes, and then compare that measurement (on my projector screen it was almost exactly 1 foot, but it would only be a few inches on a computer screen) with the map's scale in the legend/key in the bottom, right corner.
- This location was near most of the cities.
It's also far away from lakes and mountains, which can be dangerous hazards for airplanes and runways.
It's also near railroads and ports on the cost, which would be very helpful with imports and exports traveling by air. - In box C2, by the city. We would probably put it north of the city, between the two rivers. This location would provide the people in the city with a way to travel and import/export goods.
**Mr. Huck's class stopped here today.** - (c) Much, but not all, of South America is the darkest color of shading.
- (d) Brazil and Argentina are shaded the same color, as are New York and Chicago. This means choices a and b couldn't be true. The shading on the map suggests that Alaska has a much shorter growing season (60-120 days, less than half of the year) than Florida (which is 240+ days, so most of the year), so Florida's variety of crops would be much greater than Alaska's. This means choice c couldn't be true.
Columbia's growing season is most of the year
(240+ days), so their variety would certainly be greater than Canada's (120 days or less).
Choice d is true. - (b) Large cities often develop where rivers meet the sea, as ports in these locations support imports and exports.
- (c) They share an oil field, which would certainly cause conflict.
- Nation A, as they can mine the iron ore needed to make steel.
- D
- (c) Even if you can't read or follow the curved lines of the east/west measurements (longitude), the north/south degrees (latitude) should give this away easily.
- Map 1 -- This is a map of Australia.
